BIRDHOUSE
May 22 - August 8, 2026
As a two-year anniversary gift to ourselves, we’ve fit as many birdhouses into the gallery as possible.
Folks have been building birdhouses for hundreds of years! Nestboxes were used by Romans to capture birds for meat; now they are used to prevent the extinction of endangered species. The Choctaw and Chickasaw built birdhouses from dried gourds and the inhabitants served as crop defenders; a technique that was later adopted by English and German colonists. Within the Ottoman Empire, elaborate stone and tile palaces were built to house sparrows and swallows. Projecting architectural and domestic concepts onto nature is humanity’s pastime. BIRDHOUSE is an exhibition that explores this craft tradition in new (and old) ways.
